Averley – Waterway and Wetland

Cossill & Webley provided engineering design, project management, and stakeholder coordination for the delivery of a major waterway and wetland system within the Hancocks Gully Drainage Scheme in Pakenham East.

The project involved the construction of 520 metres of waterway and a 30,000m² wetland and retarding basin, designed to capture and safely manage stormwater in accordance with Melbourne Water requirements. This critical piece of infrastructure supports a residential precinct of approximately 1,500 lots, delivered over 26 stages within the Averley development.

A key achievement was the successful negotiation of a reduced waterway corridor, which maximised the amount of developable land while still ensuring long-term flood protection and delivering a landscaped wetland that serves as a valued community feature. Strategically located within the growing Pakenham East corridor, and connected to Hancocks Gully, the project balances engineering functionality with environmental and community outcomes.
